Apple on Tuesday shared insights from the Apple Hearing Study, ahead of World Hearing Day today. The study shares findings from long-term hearing health data gathered with the participation of thousands of Apple Watch and iPhone users in the US. Insights included how many experience a daily average environmental sound exposure higher than the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended limit, how many work in a loud workplace, and average weekly headphone exposure, among others. The company on the occasion of World Hearing Day also shares tips and tools to better manage their hearing health. Findings of the Apple Hearing Study were detailed in a blog post by the company. The study was conducted by Apple through its Research app, in collaboration with the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Data from the study is being shared with the WHO’s Make Listening Safe initiative. WHO estimates that by 2050, more than 700 million people globally will experience profound hearing issues. Apple notes that a quarter of the study’s participants experience a daily average environmental sound exposure higher than the WHO recommended limit, and that more than 50 percent of participants now work, or have previously worked, in a loud workplace. The study also highlighted that for one in 10 participants, the average weekly headphone exposure was higher than WHO’s recommended limit. Apple says 10 percent of the participants were diagnosed with hearing loss by a professional, and only 25 percent of those used a hearing aid or a cochlear implant. Based on the hearing data however, 20 percent of the participants qualify for having hearing loss as per WHO standards, 10 percent of which have signs of hearing loss that are consistent of being caused by noise exposure. Almost half of the participants from the study haven’t had their hearing tested a professional in the last 10 years. Nearly a quarter of the participants experience ringing in their ears a few times a week which could indicate hearing loss. In its blog post, Apple notes, “Reduced hearing can affect a person’s health and well-being in many ways, such as contributing to reduced communication, feelings of isolation, loneliness, and withdrawal.” It suggests ways in which users can avoid hearing loss in today’s world. These include using the Noise app on the Apple Watch to be aware of your environment’s noise levels, with alerts when they exceeds safe levels. The Health app on the iPhone will help users similarly, showing if headphone or environmental noise has exceeded safe levels, while also keeping a track of exposure history.
Google Chrome 89 stable version is now rolling out for Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms, the company has announced. The Chrome update brings features like customisable profiles and a work-in-progress Privacy Sandbox, along with a few features that have been in development for a long time such as native web sharing on desktop and Phone Hub for Chrome OS. These updates were previously seen on the beta version of the browser. Google says that Chrome 89 update will be rolled out for Android as well as for desktop in the coming weeks. Google announced the stable release of Chrome 89 for Android as well as desktop via separate blog posts. Google says that Chrome 89 includes many stability and performance improvements as well as new features. While Google has not published detailed changelogs yet, we can take hints from the Chrome 89 beta release announcement that lists all the features coming with the new update. One of the key features that Google Chrome 89 brings is customisable user profiles that we reported earlier. The feature allows users to customise their Google Chrome profiles within the browser using colours and backgrounds, which will make recognising and switching between different profiles a lot easier.
SHAREit Vulnerabilities Could Allow Remote Code Execution, Leak Data The second major feature is Web sharing on desktop (Windows and Chrome OS). This essentially means that users will now be able to share website links through a native sharing menu — just like it’s on Chrome for Android. If a website supports the new Web sharing feature, pressing the Share button on the website will open a native sharing menu that will show all the apps installed on your device. This will allow you to not only share website links with the social media platforms integrated on the website, but with any app on your device that supports it. As noted by Android Police, developers will not have to add any code for the functionality to work on Windows and Chrome OS. Google is reportedly also introducing Phone Hub for Chrome OS that allows you to connect your Android smartphone to your Chromebook. It will let you see your phone notifications on the desktop, control some features of your Android device from your computer, and sync Google Chrome tabs between the devices.
WhatsApp Messenger has been updated on iOS and it brings some new features like a new animation for voice messages and disables receipts for them, depending on the read receipt setting. WhatsApp has been updated to version 2.21.40 and the update is live on the App Store, though the changelog does not show what is new. This update only brings minor tweaks to WhatsApp. Back in November last year, WhatsApp added the disappearing messages feature to iOS.
While the App Store has not been updated (at the time of writing) with the latest changelog for WhatsApp since version 2.21.30 arrived last month a report by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo shows version 2.21.40 brings only a couple of small tweaks to the messaging service. There is a new progress bar animation for voice messages. Once a voice message progress bar reaches the end, it jumps back to the start. The report points out that this animation is only available on iOS 13 and beyond.
This update also tweaks the read receipt system for voice messages. If WhatsApp users on iOS have disabled read receipts, a contact that sent a voice message will not be notified when the user listens to it. Read receipts can be disabled by going to WhatsApp Settings > Account > PrivacyThe report adds that this feature has not made its way to Android yet so it is unclear if WhatsApp will push it to Android as well or remove it from iOS in the next update.
In November, WhatsApp added the disappearing messages feature to iOS and Android that allows users to automatically erase a WhatsApp messages after a certain period of time – seven days to be exact. It has to be enabled for individual chats and can be done by going to the particular chat on Android, tapping the menu icon on the top right, selecting View contact, and turning on Disappearing messages. iOS users can open a chat, tap on the profile icon, scroll to Disappearing Messages and turn it on.

Telegram has a new auto-delete feature for messages, home screen widgets, expiring invite links, and more with the latest update. The auto-delete feature will allow users to set an auto-delete timer for messages they send in any chat (presently this feature is available on Telegram for its secret messages option). The home screen widget allows you to access your chats faster and the expiring invite links system lets you make a created link inactive after a certain time. The features have been rolled out to Android and iOS versions of the Telegram app. Telegram was the most downloaded app globally in January, according to a recent report. The latest update for the Android and iOS versions of the app brings features like auto-delete messages, home screen widgets, expiring invite links, and unlimited members. The update also improves the chat importing experience and reporting system, as well as adds more animated emojis. As per its official blog post, the auto-delete messages feature in Telegram can automatically delete messages either after 24 hours or seven days after they have been sent. Once a user selects the auto-delete feature, messages from there on will be automatically deleted after the time period chosen by the user. In case of a group chat, only admins can enable or modify the timer and messages from everyone in the group will be deleted after the set time. To do this on Android, tap on the menu icon on the top right in a chat, select Clear History and then choose the time frame. On iOS, tap and hold a message, tap on Select, then tap on Clear Chat in the top left of the chat and select Enable Auto-Delete and select the time frame.

On Android, the widgets can be expanded to take up more of your screen and will always be up to date. The home screen widgets for iOS will only get fresh data “occasionally”, which the company says is due to system limitations. The Telegram update also brings expiring group invite link that can be made inactive after a certain time. Additionally, groups that are close to the 200,000 members limit can now convert into Broadcast Groups that do not have any members limit. However, only group admins can send messages in these groups.
